Papaya: A Tropical Goodness
Finding papayas in a local supermarkets in Kanata, makes me so happy. Just cutting them open, brings me back to my childhood. I introduced my kids to eating the pulp of this fruit very early on, because, it is not only a delicious fruit, but also has great health benefits.
I know about these benefits from my Grandmother. She always talked about how the papayas’ seeds and pulp help maintain a clean and healthy gut. Well, I just ate it because I liked the taste!
Grandma never told me the science behind all this. I don’t know about you, but my kids always ask why this or why that? so I like to have my answers ready!!! Papaya contains papain, an enzyme, that helps you break down proteins such as: meat or gluten and the papaya seeds contain carpaine. This anthelmintic alkaloid is very effective to keep under control the parasitic worms and amoebas in your gut. Finally, papaya seeds, when taken it effectively, detox your liver. Amazing!! No wonder we always had it before breakfast.
This fruit is also very versatile, you can add it to your smoothies, you can make salads with the pulp and even make salad dressings with the seeds.
To obtain the seeds is very easy, you do not have to buy any fancy tool to do so. Just follow the steps below.
1. Get a papaya, cut it in half
2. Take the black seeds out
3. Place them in a small plate and let them sun dry for a few days.
Voila! You got papaya seeds.
Take a look at the next picture, the one with the two small piles of seeds. One pile is papaya seeds and the other one is black peppercorns seeds. Can you tell which one is which? Please let me know in the comments. Grind papaya seeds and use them to condiment like you would do with peppercorns. Nice !!
